Building Transition

Dear families and community members,

Breckenridge Montessori’s historic 1899 home requires significant structural repairs, and the school will likely need to relocate to a new facility by July 2027.

The Board of Directors has established a Building Transition Committee, led by Brittany Krieger, to actively explore all available options, and we will continue to communicate openly and keep our community informed as plans develop and timelines become clearer.

Thank you for your continued support!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What has led to this transition?

Breckenridge Montessori operates out of a historic building constructed in 1899 and owned by the Town of Breckenridge. The Town generously purchased the building in 2016 to support the continued operation of the school at that time. While the structure remains safe in the short term, significant foundation repairs are required, and the building will no longer be usable after summer 2027 based on a structural engineering assessment. After careful review, Town staff is recommending that the Town Council not fund these extensive repairs due to the $2.65 million project cost, the building’s complex historical features and zoning constraints, compared to the number of families able to be served at this location.

2. What has been done so far?

Over the past two years, the Board of Directors has worked closely with the Town to fully understand the scope of the foundation issues and explore potential solutions. During this time, the Town evaluated a range of alternative options to identify a future home for the school, including residential properties and potential expansions to the Breckenridge Recreation Center; however, none were deemed viable. Throughout this process, the Town invested staff time and financial resources to thoroughly assess all possible options.

3. What will happen with the building?

The Town plans to recommend that the Council sell the building as is because of its structural issues, historical status, and zoning restrictions. Current zoning requires commercial use, which limits its value and how it can be used in the future. Changing it to residential is not an option, as doing so would set a new precedent for Main Street Breckenridge and could affect the character of the town.

4. Where does the school leadership stand?

Breckenridge Montessori leadership appreciates the Town’s diligent efforts to explore all possible options before reaching this difficult decision and recognizes the financial reasoning behind the choice not to fund renovations to the current building. Leadership remains committed to a collaborative relationship with the Town and will continue investigating potential new facilities for Breckenridge Montessori.

5. What is the Board of Directors doing?

The Board is exploring multiple options, including potential new locations, partnerships, fundraising strategies, and other long-term solutions. No decisions have been finalized at this time. The board welcomes community input and ideas as we navigate these changes.

6. Will the school close?

No. Breckenridge Montessori will continue operating in the current building through the end of the lease in July 2027. The Board is actively exploring long-term solutions to ensure the school’s future beyond that date.

7. Will my child’s education be affected right now?

No. Day-to-day operations, classrooms, and programs will continue as normal. Our focus remains on providing high-quality Montessori education and a nurturing environment for every child.

8. When will we know what comes next?

This is a thoughtful planning process that will take time. The school and board of directors will provide regular updates as options are evaluated and decisions are made.

9. How can families and the community be involved?

Families are encouraged to attend information sessions, provide feedback, share ideas, and participate in community discussions centered around solutions. Your voice is important in shaping the school’s future.

There will be a public Town Council meeting on February 24, 2026 where the town is expected to recommend that the foundation repairs not be funded. Community members are welcome to attend and share unified support for Breckenridge Montessori’s future in Summit County.
